Men generally perceive themselves as more physically attractive than women.
It is clear that “objective” physical attractiveness is of significant importance to many aspects of a person's life. In these studies [n= 799; 292], we were interested in the correlates of self-assessed physical attractiveness in two samples of working-aged professionals from different countries.
Males rated their self-assessed physical attractiveness higher than females, as has been found before. It is possible that men are less “disadvantaged” than women at being less physically attractive and are therefore less inclined to stress or worry about it. Another explanation may be intrasexual competition: that is, women experience more intrasexual competition based on physical appearance at the workplace than men do. Saad and Gill found that male participants rated themselves higher on physical attractiveness when facing male opponents than when facing female ones.
Interestingly, there was no such difference for the female participants in their research. Also, male participants’ self-ratings of physical attractiveness were higher than the ratings provided by their corresponding male opponents.
In both studies, we examined three ideological variables, two of which were significant. We found that more religious and more optimistic people gave higher self-assessed physical attractiveness ratings. It is not clear why religiousness is related to self-assessed physical attractiveness; it may be because all faiths stress the inherent value and worth of believers, which gives them more confidence, including body confidence.
There was also some evidence that politically liberal people rated their self-assessed physical attractiveness higher than those who were more politically conservative. Indeed, limited existing data suggest the opposite, namely that more conservative voters and politicians are more attractive than those who are more left-wing and liberal, though this has to be replicated. Thought suppression as a way of coping with unwanted cognitions is often considered maladaptive. One of the reasons for this negative evaluation lies in studies employing the white bear task. [The white bear task, when people try not to think of a white bear, demonstrates the ironic process theory, where the conscious effort to suppress a thought paradoxically triggers a rebound effect that makes that very thought flood your mind even more frequently.]
The simplicity of the white bear task, the suggestiveness of its results, and the relatively straightforward theoretical explanation have all contributed to its widespread recognition. Even among lay people, it is not uncommon to find individuals who immediately associate the concept of thought suppression with failed attempts to avoid thinking about a white bear.
Unfortunately, the popularity of the typical findings of white bear studies is not matched by their high replicability. In the most recent meta-analysis, the rebound effect was numerically reversed in almost 50% cases – that is, participants in the experimental group did not think about target thoughts more frequently than those in the control group. # The present study examined the methodological validity and theoretical underpinnings of the white bear task.
Ironic process theory failed to explain the obtained results, as the postulated hyperaccessibility of suppressed thoughts was not observed; moreover, content accessibility measures were unrelated to reported target thought frequency. No paradoxical effects were found. Instead, suppression was effective during the suppression phase, and Bayesian analysis yielded strong evidence in favor of the absence of the rebound effect.
In sum, the results of the present study did not support ironic process theory, and the outcomes of the white bear task were better accounted for by motivational factors.

How is the world doing on the development goals it set for 2030?

In 2015, every country in the United Nations agreed on the same 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 — among them, ending extreme poverty everywhere, getting every girl and boy through primary and secondary school, and bringing safe drinking water to every household. The UN tracks progress on all 17 in one place, the SDG Indicators Database.

The UN collects the numbers from the agency responsible for each subject — the World Health Organization for health, the International Labour Organization for work, etc. — then publishes them against definitions every country has agreed to. A household counts as living in a slum, for instance, if it lacks any one of five things: improved water, sanitation, enough living space, durable housing, and secure tenure.

The framework covers 234 indicators across 274 countries and territories, and some series reach back to the 1960s. We publish this data in our SDG Tracker, which has a page for each of the 17 goals. We have refreshed it with the latest release, which updated 261 of our charts, covering everything from hunger and schooling to water, work, cities, and oceans.
